2016 Cyclocross Nationals Event Report

Last week the USA's greatest Cyclocross talent descended on Asheville, North Carolina to test their skills on a world-class course in hopes of being crowned the best rider of their division in America. The sprawling Biltmore Estate hosted riders of all ages from every corner of the country to a challenging technical track that featured all the aspects of cross that make for intense racing and fun spectating.

We were at the event all week participating at the expo with our partner brand in crime, Endurance Conspiracy. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we took some time off to walk the course, take in some racing, and grab a few pics. Here's some of what we saw!

Friday: Collegiate Glory, Single-Speed Shenanigans and Donuts.

The NC State Men's Cycling Team were easy to spot at the lineup for the Collegiate D1 race.

Lewis Gaffney rode well and secured an impressive 15th. Go Pack!

The Collegiate Teams benefited from some of the driest conditions of the weekend.

The varied technical sections of the course demanded constant focus.

The Biltmore's own Bike rental Barn was used as a tunnel transition from the lower to upper part of the course.

The Bike Barn's transition was one of the few paved sections.

Well done boys, thanks for riding hard and flying the Giordana Brand at Nationals!

The sun and The Asheville Cyclocross Club came out for the afternoon Single-Speed race.

The steep slope of the Ingles "Heckler" Hill was unrideable with only one gear.

A wide range of "techniques" were used to get rider and bike up the hill.

Friday's final race was for fun and donuts!

Saturday: Juniors and Industry take the spotlight!

Junior racers and their parents flooded the course on the first half of Saturday.

The Juniors were particularly keen to try and catch some air over the massive fly-over bridge.

Local Team "Downtown Asheville Racing Club" had a young member in the mix.

Shorter legs means using a modified approach to clearing barriers.

An army of parents filled the pit area washing, wrenching, and shouting encouragement across the course to their kids.

It was exciting to see the future of U.S. Cross take on such a challenging and technical race.

The afternoon gave way to the bright kits of the Industry Race.

Sunday: The main events.

Rain fell Saturday night through Sunday morning making the course slick and muddy.

The U23 Elite racers caught the worst conditions, which made the off camber back section of the course extremely tricky.

By the afternoon the course had dried out and been packed down for the Elite Pro Races. Katie Compton set a blistering pace, and stormed to her 12th consecutive U.S. Cyclocross National Championship Title. Amazing!

Jeremy Powers left it all on the course riding a near perfect race to hold off Stephen Hyde. This is Powers' 4th Elite U.S. CX Championship Title.

In the end it was a fantastic week of racing with the country's greatest riders defending their titles. Big thanks to all the racers, the Biltmore, and North Carolina Mountain weather for providing excellent racing, course layout, and conditions for proper Cyclocross.
